What is Photography Reflector?
What is photography reflector/video light reflector/studio reflector? It’s a kind of reflector for luminaire used in the studio filming by the photographer. The reflector made by 1090 high purity aluminum. Anodized finishing and black powder coat outer surface. The feature of aluminium reflector is high strength and anti-corrosion, adapt with Bowen slot structure. The function of photography reflector is control the light direction and bring max of illumination to the target object. So the reflector greatly enhance the light utilization. A high efficiency photography reflector is determined by the curve of reflector, material and surface treatment. As per our sudy, an aluminium photography reflector with professional optic design, it’s efficiency has raised over 500% compare with the core light source without reflector.
Standard Reflector, Radar Reflector, Snoot Reflector.
Standard Reflector is a common model on the photography lighting field. The illumination of Standard Reflector can classify as “hard” light. The main reason is the Standard Reflector can concentrate the light tracks and generate hard light. Hard light can improve the color saturation and clarity of objects, highlighting the atmosphere. Compare with Softbox, Softbox can create a contrast between light and dark but the transition is not as hard as a Standard Reflector. Most photographers and studios use the 55° Standard Reflector. The 55° reflector is mainly used for portraits, pets, flowers photography. The hard light can also simulate sunlight or use sulphatic acid paper to shoot high reflective objects.
Radar Reflector also called Beauty Reflector, mainly used for portraiture photography in short distance. There has a round diffuser in the center of Radar Reflector that’s for reduce the strong illumination from the light source. Which means to softer the hard light. Therefore, the illumination of Radar Reflector is softer than Standard Reflector and Snoot Reflector. Besides, the edge area of the illumination is brighter than the center area. After using the Radar Reflector, the light is more uniform and delicate.
Snoot focuses the light on a focal area and producing a small area of hard light. It is mainly used to capture the shape details, outlines or specific objects by side view. When the Snoot matched with a honeycomb, the directionality of the light become more obvious while the illumination level is richer. When matched with a color filter, the color temperature of the light is changed and the rich lights create different atmosphere.
Honeycomb and Adapter
Honeycomb and Adapter are common accessory of Photography Reflector.
“Honeycomb” named as its shape looks like a honeycomb. The honeycomb is woven by black metal sheet as a circular or rectangle filter and place in front of reflector. Once add the honeycomb filter, the light illumination direction is under control and limited within specific area thus the object become more 3D shape. The luminous flux of the light can be controlled by adjusting the lattice size of the honeycomb . The honeycomb cover can also be used as a fill light for portraits or backgrounds, which can better highlight the atmosphere and sexiness of the subject.
There is a bayonet structure on the adapter interface which allow the Photography Reflector and the light module are tightly assembled. The size and structure of the Adapter form a set of standards which facilitates the changes of reflectors and various lighting modules. Bowen Adapter is one of common standard.

Radar Type Studio Reflector/ Video Light Reflector
- Radar Type Studio Reflector/ Video Light Reflector use a metal reflector in front of the light source for 2nd reflection and soften the light. It can also add a soft light cloth to soften the light shape. Multi-angle lighting is very suitable for portrait shooting.
- In still life photography, the use of a Radar Reflector can reduce unnecessary shadows, spots, strength the object concept to be expressed. The Radar Reflector can be also used as the main light or top light to brighten the face, or as a secondary light to outline the contour.
- Installing an additional honeycomb on the Radar Reflector can help to concentrate the light on the subject and control the lights flow away.

Spot Type Studio Reflector/ Video Light Reflector
- Use the cone shape to constrain the illumination range, reduce the illumination area of the light. The spot beam concentrates the light to the object, which capture the shape and contour of the object. It is also often used to brighten the side partial.
- The combination of the Spot Type Reflector and a honeycomb can produce a clear shadow on the partial. It can make the contour more clear and more textured.
